Donna Shank
Owner/Director, M.A.

Since my son’s diagnosis of autism and other related disorders over eight years ago, it has been my dream to create a caring place where families can obtain practical and collaborative therapies in one location. Since 2005, I have recruited, trained and supervised many students and professional therapists for my son's home program. Four years after my youngest son’s autism diagnosis, my older son was diagnosed with leukemia – he is now five-years in remission. I was inspired by his treatment which embraced treating the WHOLE person and integrating family support. My greatest wish is to help families create a road map and become their own experts about their child’s potential. I know first-hand the struggles that parents face, and at Wings to Fly we will harness every possible motivation through the use of effective, therapeutic approaches, tailored to meet your child’s unique needs. Each of us is created uniquely and see the world in a distinct and different way. In my 20 years working as a speech/language pathologist, with ages birth to adult, I have strived to help my clients communicate with their world and with others in their own way. It is my duty and privilege, as an SLP, to help my clients develop their voice whether it be through speaking, signing, spelling, writing, or typing. Chrissy Carr
Occupational Therapist, OTR/L

My over 15 years of experience in the OT field has been working with individuals of all ages with multiple disabilities in school, home and clinic settings. I also have personal knowledge with my own son who has behavioral, sensory and speech difficulties, which have given me an understanding and insight into daily struggles that children and parents experience. I am also close to my nephew with Downs Syndrome. All of these challenges have strengthened me as a therapist and made me a better advocate for families. I am a practical therapist and I strive to help children live their lives to the best of their individual abilities through a holistic approach. Every child is unique and not every child responds to therapy in the same way, therefore each therapy session is individualized for your child’s specific needs and interests. My education and additional training includes:

  • MANDT Training
  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Training and Experience
  • Handwriting Without Tears Program (Pre-K, K-5, Print & Cursive)
  • Former member of the Assistive Technology Team in Franklin County supported by Virginia Tech T/TAC Program
